Guernica (Picasso)
Guernica is a mural-sized oil painting on canvas by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso completed in June 1937.The painting, which uses a palette of gray, black, and white, is regarded by many art critics as one of the most moving and powerful anti-war paintings in history. Standing at 3.49 metres (11 ft 5 in) tall and 7.76 metres (25 ft 6 in) wide, the large mural shows the suffering of people wrenched by violence and chaos. Prominent in the composition are a gored horse, a bull, and flames.
The painting was created in response to the bombing of Guernica Basque Country village in northern Spain, by Nazi German and Fascist italian warplanes at the request of the Spanish Nationalists. Upon completion, Guernica was exhibited at the Spanish display at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans Ia Vie Modern (Paris International Exposition) in the 1937 World's Fair in Paris and then at other venues around the world. The touring exhibition was used to raise funds for Spanish war relief. Thepainting became famous and widely acclaimed, and it helped bring worldwide attention to the Spanish Civil War.
